Untruths, Distortions, And Fear Mongering Characterize Liberal Attacks Against Judge Alito

By Rev. Louis P. Sheldon

Washington, DC ? On January 24, Republican and Democrat Senators on the Judiciary Committee spent three hours giving their final thoughts as to why they would oppose or support Judge Samuel Alito for the Supreme Court.

In listening to the eight Democrats (mostly liberal or far left) give their reasons why they would vote no to confirm Judge Alito, I was struck by how amazingly similar each statement was?and how inaccurate. The Democrat statements appeared to have been written by the same person ? or persons ? using the same badly researched information on Alito?s record.

Perhaps the similarity in misstatements of fact exist because the Democrats on the committee all apparently consult with the same radical leftist organizations such as the Alliance for Justice, Center for American Progress and People for the American Way. These groups crank out their ?talking points? memos and ?studies? that purportedly describe Judge Alito?s record?yet they all are consistently inaccurate and present a sadly distorted picture of Alito.

The Republican National Committee (RNC) has exposed this network of puppet masters and their exploitation of U.S. Senators on the judiciary committee in their report, ?Puppet Politics: Values Edition.? This report clearly reveals that the supposedly left-leaning, independent-minded Democrat Senators on the committee are simply willing pawns in the hands of these radical groups?groups that are far out of the mainstream of American values.

Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-TN) in his opening statements on the Senate floor on the day the debates began on Judge Alito lamented the fact that Judge Alito?s character and record had been so badly distorted by the liberals on the committee. He observed: ?I remain profoundly disappointed in the unfair and unseemly treatment of Judge Alito during this process. His judicial record has been distorted and mischaracterized.
He has been labeled as ?non-responsive? during the hearings ? despite providing candid and articulate answers to more than 650 questions in over 18 hours of testimony, far more than many, perhaps any Supreme Court nominee in the past. And most sadly, he has been the victim of a calculated, but unsuccessful, campaign to smear his character, integrity, and credibility.?

They can continue to distort his record, but the truth is getting out through C-SPAN, the Internet, bloggers, Fox News, and other media outlets that still value facts and truth seeking.

Judge Samuel Alito, as his former colleagues who served with him on the Third Circuit Court of Appeals have said, is a fair-minded, balanced, and cautious jurist who will act honorably as an Associate Justice on the U.S. Supreme Court. The radical left groups will eventually fail in stopping Alito, but they will undoubtedly continue doing what they always do when the next Supreme Court vacancy comes. Fortunately, the truth seekers will be ready again to expose their untruths, distortions, and smear tactics. In the end, the truth will prevail, no matter what Ralph Neas or Nan Aron say.
